Human Chorionic Gonadotropin (HCG) is a hormone which is produced by the human body during pregnancy. In Beta HCG Test, the word beta stands for the beta protein of the hormone HCG. The hCG protein is produced by the placenta. The levels of Beta hCG rise continuously during the pregnancy. Beta hCG hormone gets released into the blood and from there it goes into the urine. Both the blood test of Beta hCG and Urine Pregnancy Test are based on the same principle of detecting the presence of hCG hormone. In urine pregnancy test you get the result as positive or negative but in the blood test for beta hCG the quantitative value of this hormone can be measured. Different levels of beta hCG and help in detecting the gestational age.
Beta hCG Test can diagnose a potential miscarriage, ectopic pregnancy and also down's syndrome. Secondary beta hcg test uses are evaluating cancers like lung, breast, ovarian, or uterus and non-cancerous conditions like ulcers, inflammatory bowel disease, and cirrhosis.

Beta hCG in the blood can be detected even 7 days after the fertilization. If you are trying to get pregnant or undergoing fertility treatment then your doctor would advise you to get this test done around 25th day of the start of your Last menstrual period (LMP). The best time to get the blood or urine hCG test is when the menstrual periods are missed. If the test is done very early then you could get false negative.
The usual level of Beta hCG hormone found in a non-pregnant woman is < 5 IU/L, in a postmenopausal woman is < 9.5 IU/L, and in a healthy man is < 2 IU/L. For pregnancy confirmation the beta hCG levels should be more than 5 IU/L. A good Beta hCG level is > 5 IU/L and < 70 IU/L for the first three weeks of the pregnancy.
