ABG test measures the oxygen, carbon dioxide and the pH levels in the arterial blood. ABG is not a common test and is done for critically ill patients. These patients are generally kept in ICU for monitoring and at times are on ventilators. The common condition in which your doctor may advise ABG test is lung disease, kidney failure or any breathing disorder.
How is the ABG Test Done ?
The ABG test is a blood test with no need for fasting before the test. The blood sample is taken from the artery and generally done for patients admitted in the hospital. The test is done on an ABG machine.
How often should ABG Test be Done ?
In patients who are admitted in ICU or are critical the ABG test is generally done twice a day. This is done to monitor the levels of oxygen, carbon dioxide and acidic level or pH level of blood. If the patient is admitted in the ICU for 5 days then ABG test might be done 10 times during the entire stay in the ICU.
