Interleukin-6 (IL-6) is a protein produced by various cells. It helps regulate immune responses, which makes the IL-6 test potentially useful as a marker of immune system activation. IL-6 can be elevated with inflammation, infection, autoimmune disorders, cardiovascular diseases, and some cancers. The test measures the amount of IL-6 in the blood.
Interleukin-6 is one of a large group of molecules called cytokines. Cytokines have multiple roles to play within the body and act especially within the immune system to help direct the body’s immune response. IL-6 also plays a role in body temperature regulation, bone maintenance, and brain function. It is primarily pro-inflammatory but can also have anti-inflammatory effects.

Normally, IL-6 is not detected in the blood or is present in low levels.
An elevated IL-6 may mean that the person tested has an inflammatory condition. IL-6 is elevated with a variety of conditions and has been associated in some cases with an increased risk of disease development or worsening prognosis. An increase in IL-6 may be seen in conditions such as:
Rheumatoid arthritis, lupus, and other autoimmune disorders.
Infections
Sepsis
Some cancers
Diabetes
Cardiovascular disease
Stroke

What does the IL-6 Test Measure ?
A complete blood count is a common blood test that is often a part of a routine checkup or even in case of seasonal illness. Complete blood counts can help detect a variety of disorders including infections, anemia, diseases of the immune system and even blood cancers.
Abnormal levels of red blood cells, hemoglobin or hematocrit may be a sign of anemia, heart disease or low iron levels in your body.
Low white cell count may be a sign of an autoimmune disorder, bone marrow disorder, or cancer.
High white cell count may be a sign of an infection or a reaction to medicine.
Low platelet count can be a signal of blood cancer, alcoholic liver disease, viral infections like HIV, Hepatitis etc.
Why should I do the IL-6 Test ?
The IL-6 test is not frequently ordered. C-reactive protein (CRP) is the most commonly ordered test to evaluate inflammation, but IL-6 may be ordered in conjunction with or following a CRP test when a person has signs and symptoms of an inflammatory condition or infection and a health care practitioner wants additional information.
How is the IL-6 Test Done ?
The Interlukin-6 or IL-6 test is a simple blood test with no need for fasting before the test. The blood sample can be taken by the phlebotomist at a pathology lab or at home. At NABL Certified Maurya Labs the test is done on a Fully Automatic Analyzer. The sample collection takes less than a minute.
How often should IL-6 Test be Done ?
IL-6 Test is a special test and is not done for preventive purposes. Infact it is not even the first line test. The initial test that is mostly prescribed by the doctor is CRP. In case of largely varied values in CRP you may be prescribed IL-6 test.
